Exposing this little infant to multitudes of hazardous chemicals is often more than his or her immune system can handle. The carpet contains numerous toxins known to cause allergies, illness and cancer (see “Scientific American” Magazine, February 1998 -- an infant who spends an hour on the floor gets the equivalent in cancer-causing benzene as the child would get smoking three cigarettes a day, as well as dangerous bacteria and asthma-inducing allergens, such as animal dander, dust mites, and mold). Paint and adhesives contain harmful volatile organic chemicals (VOC’s), and plastics release chemical gases. Permanent press fabrics contain, among other things, formaldehyde--which is strongest when the fabric is new. The ideal solution is to use non-toxic paint and decorating materials as well as cotton bedding, even if you have to change the sheets more often. The responsible thing to do is to include an air treatment device in the room, especially if commercial decorating materials are used.
