The stilt opera technique involves tying small wooden shoes to the legs to imitate the foot-binding walk. This acrobatic skill is used in the performance of Hua Dan (in the role of a vivacious young female) and is also known as “Oriental ballet”. The two skills are used to describe how the heroine Han Yan, on hearing that her beloved is coming, is so happy that she dresses up and hangs paintings she loves very much in order to welcome the arrival of her beloved.

压脚鼓，是梨园戏独特的司鼓技法，鼓师司鼓时将一只脚抬压在鼓面上，利用脚的位置变化和运力轻重敲出千变万化，对应相应的剧情和动作，它是梨园戏演出时的中心指挥。

 

As one of the most ancient existing opera companies in China, Liyuan Opera has a history of 800 years. It is known as “the live fossil of the ancient southern opera”.

 

Foot drum beating is a drum beating skill unique to Liyuan Opera. While the drum players are beating, they press one foot on the surface of the drum. Based on foot location and the strength of the beat, the drum  gives off various sounds that perfectly match the corresponding plot and action. Foot drum beating is the central focus of the performance of Liyuan Opera.
